Good GPS among this price range : Garmin nüvi 1300T GPS Navigation System
Got this as a gift a few months back and took it on vacation with us to Las Vegas. It was a lot easier to use than the GPS system that was built into the rental car. In fact it was working like a champ until the last day of our trip. Then when you turned it on, it would boot to the Garmin logo screen and freeze there. It was fully charged and ready to go but it would never get past that logo screen. I figured that I'd reconnect it to my laptop to see if that would shake loose the problem. Nope, no luck. Got on their web site and quickly discovered comments from other users who had a similar problem. Apparently the original software that shipped with the nuvi 1300 had a fatal software flaw in it that would cause the entire unit to seize up and be unuseable. Something happens occassionally when using the USB cable to sync with your computer. The problem is easily avoid IF you download the latest software update to the nuvi before this self destruct kicks in (which needs the USB sync to your computer to complete, so cross your fingers).

The good news is that they had very responsive customer service that shipped me out a replacement unit within a week. Down side is that it is a whole new nuvi, so any saved data on the original unit will be lost and need to re-entered on your replacement unit.

Still, despite the initial issue, I have been overall pleased with the performance of the nuvi. The screens are pretty intuitive and the Eco mode option is good if your like to track your fuel economy and route to your destination with the minimum use of gas.

So Far, So Good : Skylink SC-100 Security System Deluxe Kit
I've been using this security system for 3 years and have had NO problems with it. I had one false alarm and that was my fault (accidentally pressed the panic button on the keychain remote while it was in my pocket). The system comes with an AC powered control panel with battery back up, two door/window sensors, a keychain remote control and a motion detector. I also ordered the Skylink KP-434 Keypad Control, and extra door/window sensors as well as some window stickers and a lighted yard sign. I didn't get mine from Amazon, I got it from Norco/HomeSecurityStore because they offered free tech support if I had any problems with it. The user manual is easy to understand and has photographs of all the equipment, installation process, programming and use. Very easy to follow. I had the system completely installed and working in about 2 hours. All the batteries needed for setup are included. The system is easy to expand for all sorts of devices including telephone monitoring. You can set the system to call a neighbor, family member, police station or even an independent monitoring service. The built in siren is loud enough to be heard on my street even when all the doors are closed. The control pad and keypad control are backlit so you can see them in the dark. The system uses all sorts of batteries from 9volts to tiny little camera type batteries to those little flat round lithium batteries. Replacements can be found at any Radioshack.

The system has 5 zones and multiple devices can be programmed for each zone. Four of the five zones are visible on the control pannel and the fifth zone is "invisible". Zone one is for entrance doors and has delayed entrance feature. Zone two is for motion detectors. Zones 3 and 4 are for additional sensors set for instant activation. Zone 5 is for control devices like keypads, keychain remotes and panic buttons. You can custom program the control panel for whatever your needs are but the built in programs are probably sufficient for almost any purpose. The system supports multiple PIN numbers. It uses rolling code tech for additional security. For a fairly inexpensive system it is pretty state of the art.

I like the design of the control panel. There is no screen with little messages to read. Instead you can tell exactly what state the system is in with the use of red and green lights. In a few days of use you will be able to glance at the panel and tell what mode the system is in. You don't have to walk up to it and read messages.

TIPS FOR INSTALLATION AND USE

1. READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL. If you don't do this then you will not know how to arm the system. There are no on and off buttons. You have to remember your PIN Code and know which letters and symbol to push and the only way to do that is to read the manual. The manual covers everything you need to know except for installing optional devices and complete instructions come with those devices. If you do have a problem, Skylink has decent customer service. I had to call them one time with a question in three years and within 3 minutes of dialing the number I was off the phone with my question answered.

2. DON'T INSTALL THE CONTROL PANEL BY THE ENTRANCE DOOR OR SIT IT ON A TABLE WITH THE CORD SHOWING. Install it in a less obvious place and cover the cord. I did a wall mount in the middle of the house and hid the AC cord underneath the woodwork and the plug is in an outlet behind a heavy piece of furniture. If the cord should get cut, the battery in the control panel will keep the system activated. If anyone attempts to remove the battery without first entering the PIN then the alarm will activate. Not fool proof but better than nothing. Don't give an intruder any help by just sitting the thing out with the cord visible.

3. USE THE HARDWARE PROVIDED TO MOUNT THE SYSTEM PARTS AND DON'T HANG IT UP WITH TAPE. Yes, the alarm comes with double sided tape but the instructions clearly point out this is only for the initial temporary install. Once you have all the sensors, panels and detectors installed with tape and have checked to see that it is working properly then you MUST use the screws that are provided to do a permanent install. It helps to have a small drill to start the holes for the screw. Use the tape for checking placement and for leaving both hands free to handle the little sensor magnets and screws. Use a small Philips screwdriver. If you leave this thing up with just the provided temporary tape then be sure things are gonna fall down (probably in the middle of the night, giving you a false alarm).

4. BUY A KEYPAD FOR THE ENTRANCE DOOR and put the control panel somewhere else. Even if you use the keychain remote to arm and disarm the system, you will still want a keypad by your main entrance so other people can turn the system on and off (babysitter, housesitter, relatives etc.). The system will support an additional PIN that you can give to someone for temporary access. Then you can reset the system with a different PIN while keep your personal PIN. Instructions for this are in the ADVANCED PROGRAMMING section of the user manual.

5. CHANGE THE BATTERIES! If you don't keep up with the batteries the thing won't work. Every sensor has some sort of alert to let you know it is working. All door sensors have a test button. If it dosen't light up red when you press the button then your battery is dead. Also, put the system in "chime" mode and check every sensor and detector to make sure signal is getting to the control pannel. The motion detector will make a chirping sound when the battery is low to alert you. It also has a red light behind the screen that flashes briefly when motion is detected so look up at every once in a while to make sure you see the red light when you move. If you don't see it turn red, you missed the warning chirps and should change the battery. The control panel has a low battery indicator light as does the keypad control. Whenever there is a time change and you change out the batteries in your smoke detectors, do the same thing for your alarm system. You can buy all the strange little batteries on line or at any electronic store like Radio Shack. If you do that regularly then your system will keep working. It will take you about 15 minutes to change all the batteries but that isn't such a big deal is it?

6. DON'T INSTALL THE MOTION DETECTOR AROUND AIR VENTS OR WHERE PETS WALK. If you have curtains near an AC/Heating vent then the air will blow the curtains and your motion detector will notice and give you a false alarm. Don't install the motion detector in a room with a running ceiling fan. Turn the fan off before you turn on the motion detector. If you have a cat or dog, keep them out of the area covered by the motion detector . They WILL set it off, even a little cat. Even on the low sensitivity a small cat will set these off. You will have to close the door and keep kitty out of any room covered by the motion detector or you are gonna get false alarms and if you have the telephone option set up you may get complaints about false alarm nuisance calls so either close the door so kitty dosen't wander in or don't turn the motion detector on. Those are your only choices.

7. INSTALL YARD SIGN AND WINDOW STICKERS, OUTSIDE LIGHTS and DEADBOLT LOCKS and leave a light on inside when you go out at night and chances are a burglar will pass you by for a less protected looking house and you will never have your alarm system tested for real.

I got everything for under $200 bucks, installed it myself in a couple of hours, have kept the batteries maintained, used a little bit of thought when planning the placement of everything, READ THE MANUAL and have used the system on a regular basis for 3 years without any problems. If you take a little time to learn it, it is easy to use. I think it was a good purchase.

Ok, this is my first Amazon product review... so here goes.

I had this alarm / remote start installed on 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, and although it has only been installed for 3 days, everything works perfect. The alarm part of this system works flawlessly, with easy access to the valet button, which also happens to be the antenna for the system and the blue LED light as well; so mount it high, perhaps above the rear view mirror on your windshield, so you insure a good signal, let thieves know you have a alarm (they will see the flashing blue LED) and it is easy to press the valet switch. Not much more to really say about the alarm... it's an alarm; it's loud and annoying, which is pretty much what you want from an alarm.

The remote start part of this system also seems to work without any real hickups (thus far anyway). You just press the remote start button, and in about 4 - 5 seconds or so, it starts up just fine. Just remember to set your vehicle temp the way you want it before you get out. Also, the alarm will stay enabled while the remote start is running, until you press the unlock button to disarm the alarm. After you get in, just turn your key to ON (not start - your car is already started) and press the break and your normal functions take over from there. Try pressing the break or putting it in gear without the key in, and the engine will die. The engine will also die if you open the hood without the key in. I did notice the second night I had it, I started the truck at night, got in, and turned the key to START instead of just ON (old habit now), and the lights wouldn't come on. I had to turn off the truck and start the car like I normally would... don't know if this is some kind of glitch in wiring or what, but haven't had it happen again... just remember that once you remote start, all you have to do is insert the key to the ON position, and then step on the break, before putting it in gear. You can also set the remote start run time to 12 mins (default), 24 mins or 60 mins; more about this below.

Now with all the good out of the way, let me get to the one bad thing... the remote. My problem is not with the features, they are great. You can set the LCD screen color to your preference, you can set whether you want the time, temp or run time to show once you enable the remote start. You can choose whether you want the remote to beep, beep and vibrate, just vibrate, or be silent. You also get rid of the annoying remote start run time count down reminder, so that you don't get beeped or buzzed 3 mins and 1 min before your remote start times out and turns off. There are actually a lot of things you can customize to your preference, just read the manual, it covers all the remote settings. F.Y.I., to enable the temp on the remote and also quickly show it while the remote start is not running, simply press the Function button once, and then press and hold it again for about 2 sec, manual says 1 1/2 sec, but it's 2, and then the temp will flash. To make the temp show all the time when the remote start is active, simply change the setting to temp. for remote start view; sadly this is not an option when the remote start is not enabled, all you get is the time, other than the quick check just described above.
No, my main complaint about the remote is its size. The 2-way LCD remote is pretty fat and wide. I'm learning to deal with it, but it's still pretty cheaply made. I really would prefer the 2-way remote on the Python 872 system (looks just like the skinnier 1 way remote, but with lights to yet you know whats active). The manual says that this remote isn't compatible however, but I'm still researching this... have to get back to you.

Now, with all that said, I would like to add a couple of more things. First off is changing the remote start run time... what a freaking pain.
So you don't get install instructions, or if they did come with it, my installer didn't give them back to me, and your manual does not tell you how to change the run time for the remote start from the default 12 mins to 24 or 60 mins. What good is 12 mins when it's like 10 degrees outside; car needs a little longer than that. So either ask your installer to change it for you, or just follow these instructions:

Steps to change Remote Start Run Timer (please don't try this with other older or newer models, I don't want to be responsible for you messing up your system):
1) Disable/Unlock Alarm
2) Leave your door open
3) Insert key and turn to ON (NOT START), and turn back to OFF (Leave it in)
4) Press and HOLD the Valet Button... you will hear a chirp/horn honk/light blink after 3 sec (depending on how your alarm is wired to your vehicle). Keep holding the valet button until you hear/see the 3rd set of chirps/honks/lights blink... there will be a pause between each set; you want the 3rd set. After the 3rd set of whatever noise or sight your vehicle is making, let the valet switch go. You are now in the 3rd menu of the setup.
5) Now, within 10 sec, press and release the valet button 4 times, and then press and HOLD the valet button a 5th time. The alarm should chirp/honk/blink the corresponding number of times you pressed it; in this case 4. You are now in the 4th sub-menu of menu 3, which is Remote Start Runtime.
6) Now, while still holding the valet button, press the LOCK button on the remote/key fob; 1 time = 12 mins (default), 2 times = 24 mins and 3 times = 60 mins. The alarms should do its sound or visual confirmation when you press the LOCK button. i.e. one honk or LED blink is 1 (12 mins), 2 is 24 mins, and 3 is 60 mins.
7) Once you have your desired time set, simply let go of the valet button and close your door, take your key out, etc... you are good to go! Give it a minute or two, and then try out your remote start with your LCD 2-way remote and check the timer to confirm you did it correctly.

I know that sounds like a lot, but after you do it a time or two, its really quite simple. The other thing you might want to do is change the default setting of "Vehicle Temp Auto Report." This is stated in the install guide as, "When programmed ON the main unit stores the interior temp in its temporary memory. When the vehicle's interior temp changes 1 degrees Celsius, the main unit automatically sends the interior temperature message to the remote screen." The default for this option is OFF (for some stupid reason). Just follow the same steps as above, except this time in Step 5, instead of pressing the valet button only 4 times, you have to press it 17 times, and hold it on the 18th! Yeah, I know WTF??, but just make sure you count 17. Once in the sub-menu (and still holding the button on the 18th time), press the LOCK button on the remote twice; there's only two options here: 1 = OFF (default) and 2 = ON, listen for the confirmation as before.

Sorry for the long, detailed steps, but the person who installed my unit, didn't bother to ask me how I would have liked it setup, not that I would have have known to ask. Just thought I would help those in the same position, as there is very little on the internet for these processes, and they vary by model age; and it was almost impossible to find the install guide on the internet as well. And Yes, I would definitely recommend having this unit professionally installed by a reputable dealer.

My only other advice would be to add some extras, your getting a pretty good deal on Amazon, might as well add some cool extras to your alarm to really help protect your valuables, and Amazon has some of the best prices on these too. These are the three I got installed along with my unit, there are a few more, but I would definitely recommend these three ( I won't review them b/c I haven't really had time to mess with them yet, and b/c most of you have already stopped reading this super long boring review):
